A Conversation With a Bigot

Email Exchange May 31, 1996

Background:

This message was part of a discussion of homophobia. My opponent had made the claim that homosexuality is "unnatural". I pointed out that by definition no act can be "unnatural" if it is found anywhere in nature. I further pointed out that homosexual behavior has been observed in apes, lions, dogs and cats, among others.

He responded, "You compare men with animals, how pathetic."

This was my answer:

Well, we are animals, after all. Look, all the evidence indicates that sexual orientation is determined primarily by genetics, i.e. before birth. It is simply wrong to discriminate against people because of something that they are born with. I am sorry that homosexuality makes you squeamish, but I find ignorant people equally dismaying and yet somehow find a way to live among them.

His sputtering reply is amusing enough to quote. I hope you enjoy the spelling and punctuation as much as I have.

all this so called evidence is bogus , your evidence was also compiled by a pro- gay group so i can see how and why they came to the conclutions they laid out. think they would tell you that they proved they were wrong ?
....nope

we ,by the way , are NOT animals, pick up the Bible sometimes and find out the difference. man has a free will ,to do as he/she pleases, animals don't

After reading a few messages from these people, one begins to feel sad. I really don't believe they have an entire semester of high-school English between them, poor things.
